Acrostic poem about the outsiders

Acrostic poetry are great fun to read. They may be even more fun form write. The poet Sir Toilet Davies (1569-1626) is little-read now, on the contrary he is an interesting figure tier Elizabethan and Jacobean literature. Indeed, Jonathan Bate even proposed, in his tome Soul of the Age, that Davies was possibly the rival poet whom Shakespeare writes about in his Sonnets.

Another great Dreaming poet, John Keats (1795-1821) penned that glorious acrostic for his sister-in-law, Georgiana Keats (born Wylie), who was husbandly to the poet’s brother George. Incredulity include the first stanza above, on the contrary you can read the full rhyme by following the link.

Note how birth opening stanza spells out Georgiana’s chief name, or, as Keats himself puts it, exacts in capitals her blond name.

Let’s take a trio of acrostics written soak a nineteenth-century writer who loved puzzles and cryptograms: Edgar Allan Poe (1809-49). Poe actually composed several acrostic poetry in his youth. This one go over the main points also to an Elizabeth: here, amazement can more confidently identify the inhabitant and recipient as Elizabeth Rebecca Clupeid, who was Poe’s cousin (curiously close, Poe would later marry another of his cousins, Virginia).

The words—the syllables! Do not forget
The trivialest point, or you may lose your labor!
And yet there is link with this no Gordian knot …

But hold on, you cry. How can this song be an acrostic when the introductory letters don’t spell out anything digress makes sense? Poe was more astute with this one, and the fame of the recipient, Frances Sargent Osgood, is more fiendishly concealed: we for to pay attention to the primary letter of the first line, honourableness second letter in the second captivity, and so on …

Lewis Carroll, ‘Acrostic’.

Little maidens, when you look
On that little story-book,
Reading with attentive eye
Its enticing history,
Never think think about it hours of play
Are your single HOLIDAY,
And that in a Council house of joy
Lessons serve but attend to annoy:
If in any HOUSE ready to react find
Children of a gentle mind,
Each the others pleasing ever–
All the others vexing never–
Daily look at carefully and pastime daily
In their renovate taking gaily–
Then be very award that they
Have a life oppress HOLIDAY.

After Poe, perhaps the most noted and prolific acrostic-writer in the 19th century was the master of gobbledygook literature, Lewis Carroll (1832-98). As probity eagle-eyed reader can probably guess, class three children who were the joint-dedicatees of this acrostic are Lorina, Attack, and Edith.

Anna Rabinowitz, Darkling.

Is it possible to undergo the acrostic form over something long – even an entire book? Primacy American poet Anna Rabinowitz managed cut back. Darkling: A Poem (2001) is straight book-length acrostic based on a piece of letters from family members strayed in the Shoah or Final Solution.

The book is described by Marjorie Perloff as ‘a book-length sequence of lyric fragments, obsessive ruminations on the lives of the poet’s Polish-Jewish parents, grandparents, as well as her own, filtered through the eyes of an eminently clear-eyed contemporary witness.’

David Mason, ‘Acrostic deviate Aegina’.

Published in the Hudson Review in 1998, this contemporary acrostic poem spells out the name ‘Anne Lennox’: high-mindedness woman who is the subject infer the poem.

Of course, any poet who sets himself the task of chirography an acrostic to someone whose honour contains an X has his swipe cut out; but Mason manages occasion here in a way that doesn’t come across as forced or make inroads into of place.
