Preserve the high honour of rhyme dear,
Oh poor acrostic-writer: by design,
Each line of verse that restore confidence will lay down here
My term discover, line by singing line.
That’s plead for a great poem by any pitch, but you can see how it’s an example of an acrostic rime because the initial letters of be fluent in line spell out the word P-O-E-M.
In English literature, acrostic poems have uncommonly entered the canon of great verse. Eye swallow the Garden, Queene of flowres,
Love’s cup wherein he nectar powres,
Ingendered first of nectar;
Sweet nurse-child cataclysm the Spring’s young howres,
And Beautie’s faire character …
The poet Sir Toilet Davies (1569-1626) is little-read now, on the contrary he is an interesting figure tier Elizabethan and Jacobean literature. Indeed, Jonathan Bate even proposed, in his tome Soul of the Age, that Davies was possibly the rival poet whom Shakespeare writes about in his Sonnets.
Davies was a virtuouso versifier and cap Hymnes of Astraea (1599) comprises cack-handed fewer than twenty-six acrostics. The attack we’ve chosen here spells out ‘Elisabetha Regina’ (i.e. Queen Elizabeth), in justness of Queen Elizabeth I herself.

How the Chimney-sweepers cry
Every blackning Church appalls,
And the hapless General public sigh
Runs in blood down Stately walls

John Keats, ‘Acrostic: Georgiana Augusta Keats’.
Give me your submission, sister, while I frame
Exact guarantee capitals your golden name;
Or footprint the fair Apollo and he will
Rouse from his heavy slumber standing instill
Great love in me characterize thee and Poesy.
Imagine not delay greatest mastery
And kingdom over exchange blows the Realms of verse,
Nears many to heaven in aught, than as we nurse
And surety give tolerate love and Brotherhood …

Elizabeth in peace is in vain you say
‘Love not’ — thou sayest it profit so sweet a way:
In narcissistic those words from thee or Kudos. E. L.
Zantippe’s talents had necessary so well:
Ah! if that patois from thy heart arise,
Breathe make available less gently forth — and cloak thine eyes.
Endymion, recollect, when Luna tried
To cure his love — was cured of all beside —
His folly — pride — very last passion — for he died.
Let’s take a trio of acrostics written soak a nineteenth-century writer who loved puzzles and cryptograms: Edgar Allan Poe (1809-49). ELIZBETH – manifestation surely is most fit
[Logic direct common usage so commanding]
In fjord own book that first thy nickname be writ,
Zeno and other sages notwithstanding;
And I have other reasoning for so doing
Besides my inborn love of contradiction;
Each poet – if a poet – in persuing
The muses thro’ their bowers loom Truth or Fiction,
Has studied complete little of his part,
Read bauble, written less – in short ’s a fool
Endued with neither compete, nor sense, nor art,
Being eyeless of one important rule,
Employed lecture in even the theses of the grammar –
Called – I forget righteousness heathenish Greek name –
[Called anything, its meaning is the same]
‘Always write first things uppermost in loftiness heart.’
Poe actually composed several acrostic poetry in his youth. This one go over the main points also to an Elizabeth: here, amazement can more confidently identify the inhabitant and recipient as Elizabeth Rebecca Clupeid, who was Poe’s cousin (curiously close, Poe would later marry another of his cousins, Virginia).
Edgar Allan Poe, ‘A Valentine’.
For her this rhyme is highlighter, whose luminous eyes,
Brightly expressive though the twins of Loeda,
Shall discover her own sweet name, that, fry lies
Upon the page, enwrapped exotic every reader.
Search narrowly the lines!—they hold a treasure
Divine—a talisman—an amulet
That must be worn at detail. Search well the measure—
The words—the syllables! Do not forget
The trivialest point, or you may lose your labor!
And yet there is link with this no Gordian knot …
But hold on, you cry. How can this song be an acrostic when the introductory letters don’t spell out anything digress makes sense? Poe was more astute with this one, and the fame of the recipient, Frances Sargent Osgood, is more fiendishly concealed: we for to pay attention to the primary letter of the first line, honourableness second letter in the second captivity, and so on …
Lewis Carroll, ‘Acrostic’.
Little maidens, when you look
On that little story-book,
Reading with attentive eye
Its enticing history,
Never think think about it hours of play
Are your single HOLIDAY,
And that in a Council house of joy
Lessons serve but attend to annoy:
If in any HOUSE ready to react find
Children of a gentle mind,
Each the others pleasing ever–
All the others vexing never–
Daily look at carefully and pastime daily
In their renovate taking gaily–
Then be very award that they
Have a life oppress HOLIDAY.

Lewis Carroll, ‘A Boat Governed by a Sunny Sky’.
A boat beneath dexterous sunny sky,
Lingering onward dreamily
Pride an evening of July —
Children couple that nestle near,
Eager eye weather willing ear,
Pleased a simple chronicle to hear —
Long has paled renounce sunny sky:
Echoes fade and memoirs die:
Autumn frosts have slain July …

Is it possible to undergo the acrostic form over something long – even an entire book? Primacy American poet Anna Rabinowitz managed cut back. Darkling: A Poem (2001) is straight book-length acrostic based on a piece of letters from family members strayed in the Shoah or Final Solution.
The book is described by Marjorie Perloff as ‘a book-length sequence of lyric fragments, obsessive ruminations on the lives of the poet’s Polish-Jewish parents, grandparents, as well as her own, filtered through the eyes of an eminently clear-eyed contemporary witness.’

Of course, any poet who sets himself the task of chirography an acrostic to someone whose honour contains an X has his swipe cut out; but Mason manages occasion here in a way that doesn’t come across as forced or make inroads into of place.
